What is headlamp alignment?

Headlamp aim may be affected over time or whenever a new bulb is fitted. Correct alignment is an important road safety feature that ensures you, the driver, can see enough of the road both in the distance and near to you. UK cars have headlamps that dip to the left so that oncoming drivers aren't dazzled.

How often do headlights need to be adjusted?

Headlamp alignment is recommended in the following situations: after fitting a new bulb, before an MOT, after a collision, or at least once every 12,000 miles.

Is headlight alignment an MOT failure?

Yes, although headlight alignment may seem minor, a new MOT policy implemented in March 2016 heightened the testing standards for car headlights. It now underscores the importance of proper alignment, stating that it shouldn't be merely a quick check.

Consequently, partially or fully misaligned headlights can be detected by an MOT inspector, resulting in a failed test.

Consequences for not aligning your headlights

Regular headlight alignment is essential to ensure your safety on the road. Incorrectly adjusted headlights pose a danger to the driver and also to other road users. Bulbs not properly adjusted can fail to provide adequate illumination and may even dazzle oncoming drivers.

You can also potentially fail your MOT and incur in extra expenses by not having your lights properly adjusted.
