Buy starter motors online
The starter motor ensures your engine turns over and starts up. Turning the ignition key energises the motor, causing the starter motor to engage. A rod inside this motor pushes a pinion gear into the flywheel to kickstart the engine. Then, the engine begins to turn, causing the combustion chamber to suck in a steady flow of air to mix with fuel. Finally, the spark plug ignites the air-fuel mix to power your vehicle.
Without the starting motor, your car won’t start. It relies on your car battery to supply the ignition, so if your car battery is flat, you won’t have any vehicle power. Even if just one part is damaged or broken, it could affect the starter motor’s ability to start your engine. So, it’s crucial to get them replaced. Enter your vehicle registration number and we’ll show you the correct starter motor for your car, alongside other products designed for your vehicle.

Reasons for starter motor failure
Starter motors can fail for all kinds of reasons. If your battery is flat, it can’t power the starter motor to start the engine. But, if the car battery is functioning correctly and your starter motor is still failing to start the car, it could be due to an electrical or starter motor fault.
A starter motor could be faulty due to the following:
- Worn out brushes: Responsible for conducting electricity in the starter motor.
- Faulty solenoid: delivers full starting power from the motor to the flywheel.
- Pinion: Needs contact with the flywheel to start turning the engine over.
- Lever fork: Moves the pinion into position with the flywheel ring gear.
A common fault with a starter motor is a faulty solenoid, which is located on the motor itself. It’s responsible for transmitting electricity to the motor. Also, if the pinion gear is in constant contact with the flywheel, this can cause the engine to spin the starter motor too fast, causing it to damage.
Replacing starter motors
If you suspect the starting motor isn’t functioning correctly, or your engine won’t turn over, you could need to replace the starter motor as soon as possible. Head to your local Halfords garage and we’ll be happy to take a look.
Alternators
An alternator is part of your car’s electrical system. It charges your battery to power the ignition and other parts of your car. It works by turning mechanical energy into electric energy, which charges the vehicle’s battery.
Brakes
Car brakes are crucial for ensuring vehicle and road safety. The brake pads, discs, and calipers work together to bring your car to a halt by creating friction. It’s common for the braking system to become worn over time. If the brakes don’t work correctly, it could affect your ability to stop safely on the road.
Car battery
The car battery supplies electricity to your car. It powers the starter motor to get everything moving. It's also responsible for powering the car’s electrical system. If the car battery is flat, your car won’t turn over.
