A steering boot covers the CV joint and creates a seal between the pinion and rack. Located on each end of the steering gear, their primary job is to prevent debris from entering the CV joint and clogging it up. Without the desired protection from the steering rack boot, the CV joint will crack; damaging the entire rear axle. The steering boot itself is also prone to general wear and tear as your car clocks up miles. Being exposed to the elements can also damage the steering rack boot, as wind, rain and salt from the air settle on the boot. It makes perfect sense to take good care of your steering rack boot, as it is far less expensive to replace the boot than it is the entire axle. When it comes to steering, gaskets play an important role in preventing fluid from leaving the steering system and causing a leak.
