What are CV joints on a car?

CV joints are most common in front-wheel drive cars, but depending on the suspension systems, are sometimes found in rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive and four-wheel drive vehicles too. CV joints are essential for transferring torque at a constant speed to the drive wheels from the transmission and differential system. Their flexibility provides movement to all angles as the vehicle is in motion and, put simply, prevents the axle from breaking as the vehicle hits a bump. Ball-type and tripod-type are the two most common types of CV joint, with front-wheel drive vehicles using ball-type joints on the outer side of the driveshaft and tripod-type CV joints on the inner side.

Symptoms of bad CV joints

Is your CV joint noisy? Just like all car parts, CV joints are prone to general wear and tear if exposed to dirt and moisture. Failure of the joint will cause a clunking sound when you change gear that you should be able to hear from within the cabin. Other signs include clicking or knocking noises when you turn to full lock, vibration when you accelerate, or lubricant leaking from the joint boot.
