Does changing a tyre affect the pressure sensors (TPMS)?
Changing a tyre can affect the pressure of your tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS). Whether it does often depends on the condition of your existing sensors and the type of TPMS you have in your vehicle. Read on to learn about the two main types.
Direct and Indirect TPMS
There are two main types of TPMS: direct and indirect. Knowing the differences can help you manage your TPMS after changing your tyres.
Direct TPMS
A direct TPMS uses mounted sensors inside each tyre. If your vehicle has a direct TPMS, it usually doesn't need replacing after changing a tyre. However, your system may take a short while to adjust to the new tyre pressure readings.
Indirect TPMS
Indirect TPMS does not use pressure sensors in the tyres. Instead, it relies on the vehicle's existing ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) sensors to read tyre pressure. As such, they may need resetting after changing a tyre.
