Van tyres explained
Generally speaking, a van has a more demanding job than your typical passenger car. Most LCVs travel for several used hours a day—whether that’s making regular deliveries or travelling from site to site. Then there’s extra weight. Additional cargo requires robust rubber that’s capable of keeping shape under pressure. That’s why van tyres are typically harder wearing and feature reinforced sidewalls as standard.
Vans come in all shapes and sizes. So, it shouldn’t come as much surprise that compact city-ready models have different tyre requirements to Luton tail-lifts, for instance. Dimensions, payloads, gross weights; there are tons of variables. That’s why we sort van tyres into several distinct categories:
- Small van tyres
- Medium van tyres
- Large van tyres
- Pick-up truck/4x4 tyres
- Minibus/MPV tyres
- Campervan tyres
- Campervan tyres
It would be best if you replaced your van tyres once they’re showing signs of wear. Unsure how to check? Pop a 20 pence coin into the tread and see if the depth is below 1.6mm—this is the legal limit. Please be mindful, though, that you’ll notice a drop in performance long before reaching the 1.6mm line. Cheap van tyres usually wear quicker than pricier alternatives, but there’s plenty of other factors at play, including the amount of cargo you carry. Here are a few things you can do to make your tyres last longer.
