If you drive a larger vehicle such as a minivan, light truck, 4x4 or SUV you need to make sure it is kitted out with a set of tyres that can handle heavier loads to keep you and your passengers safe.

Extra load tyres or XL tyres are a special breed of tyres constructed to deal with the demands that larger vehicles place on them. XL tyres are heavier than standard car tyres, commonly being reinforced to handle heavier loads and increased tyre pressure. You can spot these tyres by looking to see if they are marked with labels such as Extra Load (XL), Reinforced (Reinf) or occasionally EXL, RFD or RF.

Buying XL tyres will benefit your vehicle by allowing you to travel longer distances than with normal non-reinforced tyres. XL tyres also have better resistance to mechanical damage and better stability.

At Halfords we stock an extensive range of XL tyres to keep your vehicle safe and stable when carrying heavier loads. For a more sporty option, we can strongly recommend the Continental PremiumContact 6, which strikes a great balance between performance and comfort. An alternative mid-range option comes with the Falken Azenis FK510 which delivers outstanding handling in wet and dry conditions and excellent fuel economy.

Whatever type of larger vehicle you are buying for, Halfords has got you covered. If you need a helping hand in deciding on what tyres to choose, simply head over to our tyre buying guide or book in a tyre check at your local Halfords Autocentre. Once you have settled on a new set of wheels we’ll get you up and running as quickly as possible with our free fitting in branch or at a location of your choosing.
